Burning Questions: Decide to leave Ms. Brett to her fate
This is "slapdashmonuments" creating a new Ficlatte account for the purpose of trying to write some Choose Your Own Adventure stories using Ficlatte's sequeling features. I'll tag work-in-progress parts WIP until the whole story is ready to play.

You stop in your tracks and stare into Ms. Brett's eyes.
"You didn't... start this fire on purpose, did you?" you demand, aghast.
Ms. Brett raises her eyes to yours for a moment, and then they slide guiltily away from your gaze. It's as much as an admission of guilt, to you.
Ms. Brett tried to burn down the building. Hell, she may still have been successful. This story isn't over yet.
Or perhaps you decide to go it solo; the story may be over for this wretch. But!
Not for you, at least.
