Tamori Taka: The parting of her only childhood friend
I have been HS Wift for the longest time now, through some of the darkest hours I have known, and it warms my heart to know that the light that led me through lives on still.
May it never die.
The next year passed in a blur, the two friends and lovers filling it with all the experiences they could, knowing that Keshintai was nearing the end of her studies. This would mean they would see each other far less often, so they made up the difference in advance.
Keshintai's gempukku came shortly before the year's end. The young scion of the Mirumoto took a new name for her adulthood, as is customary during the nanori, but Taka could only think of her as Keshintai. It is worth noting here, that Taka will not actually take the name Taka until her own gempukku about a year later, and was named at birth Tamori Jinsai, but that would have been super confusing to track, since this story is being written for the character during events that occurred after her gempukku.
That night, the pair lay together for what they knew would be the last time for a while, and so they filled the night with passionate intimacy. The next day, Keshintai left for their home town, such that her adult life might begin.

Ah, the dangers of writing historically-accurate (or -based) fiction. I prefer to write alternate-history or loosely-inspired settings to avoid this difficulty.

I wrote this as a backstory for a character I'm playing in an RPG, so my hands were tied a little on the setting, and I must say I do prefer working in settings where I have complete creative control

Sorry for the sidebar. This is where it bears relevance that I am constantly researching rokugani culture to try and keep this story as true to AEG's marvelous setting as I can, but sometimes I'll find information which kinda pisses on everything I've written so far. Today I properly read the article on gempukku, which I'd read parts of before, and discovered that the name a samurai has as a child, isn't the same name they have as an adult, the result of which is a clunky italicised sidebar, as I don't want to have to go back and edit all of the previous chapters. Nobody would know what was going on.
Also in the same wiki entry, I found the information I'd been looking for for months on rokugani education, and it turns out that Taka and Keshintai should've gone to their dojos five years earlier than they did, and graduated two years earlier. Eh, blame it on the Dragon Clan. The Dragon are weird like that.
