Lost Things: Case 39
"What has been lost can be found at Building Grachkin, Floor 60, Row 95, Shelf 7, Case 39 between 9:30 and 9:40 tomorrow morning."
The note was unsigned and apart from the location referred to, nothing on either side of the paper indicated its origin. I reopened the front door to see if I could still intercept the courier before he drove off but it was too late; his van was already underway. I checked the envelope for anything that identified the sender or even the courier but there was nothing.
I was not aware that I had lost anything. My curiosity was piqued.
The following morning at 9:30, I approached Case 39. Where some of the cases were transparent so that the contents could be clearly seen, Case 39 was opaque and its contents were a mystery. Furthermore, the case required a key which I had not been given.
As I pondered what to do next, I heard quiet footfalls. Another man turned into the row, coming towards me, inspecting the shelves. He looked vaguely familiar.
"Sam, is that you?"
