"What's this ring about?" he rounded on me with accusation, hurt, and anger in his eyes.
"This is a promise ring."
"Promise!? You took VOWS to be my wife!"
Patiently, and without fear, I patted to the cushion next to me. He sat, but his hands shook. "Listen, there's this ghost, okay?"
"A ghost?"
"I know, I never put much stock into the paranormal, but I saw her."
"Her?"
"It was my best friend's ex-wife. Anyway, she cried these two beautiful tears into my palm and they solidified as diamonds."
"Wait, what?"
"You know I wouldn't make this up."
He looked puzzled, unsure whether to believe me.
"So I took them to a psychic lady, because, who else? I wanted to leave them there, but she made them into rings."
"Rings plural?"
"One for me and one for him."
"Him."
"They link us by the ghost. She wants us to protect each other."
"Protect?"
"That's it. Be there for each other."
"So you aren't leaving me?"
"Nope. But sometimes I might have to rescue my friend."
He paused for a while. "When the ring says."
"Yep."
"Okay."
