Eric strode out the front door, determined to put this whole messy business behind him. Thomas wasn't about to make that easy.

"What the hell was that for?!" Thomas yelled.

Eric stopped, turning on Thomas with a suddenness that gave the movement more threat than intended. Thomas tensed, hands and feet shifting into a fighting stance.

Realizing what he'd done, Eric put up his hands. "Easy, there, kid," he said calmly. "I don't want to fight you."

Thomas relaxed a little. "Then explain..."

"She was lying to me. People lying to me make me want to shoot them." He said that as though it should have been the most obvious answer in the world. "So, I just finished the job I started 20 years ago."

Thomas started laughing. "What's so funny, kid?" Eric scowled.

"How did you become a successful witch hunter without having the first clue about what your targets can do?"

Eric shrugged. "Dunno. Dumb luck, I guess."

Thomas laughed harder. "Emphasis on 'dumb'."

I may have to shoot him, too, Eric thought.
