Winter's Wards

slapdashmonuments

Inspiration hits with a flash, stories written on the go. A rumble of laughter and the tale is heard only in echoes. The wind blows me in a new direction. Whom shall I visit next?

Shy child in tatters

Winter's ward

Too weak and cold

To lift her sword

How hast thou come here?

Stumble toward

My outstretched arms, dear waif!

.

Sweet sprite of whimsy!

Tumbling round

The fairy circles

On the ground,

Be'est fille or faery,

Thou hast found

A friend who'll keep thee safe!

.

For ev'ry small one

Needs to feel

Loved and protected,

Needs a meal

And home, and clothing.

For thy weal,

I'll shield you. Call me Rafe.

Come to me, dears. Be safe.

If I had a fairy, a good fairy, I wonder what I shall do?

Explore this idea in a sequel, if you wish!

I had the notion last night on the way home from work: Is the speaker a trustworthy person, or someone more sinister?

What do you think?

That little girl is an interesting personage to me, and I may go and create a more complete OC just to see what she's about. The speaker here sounds caring and empathetic, but then if someone were up to no good they'd aim for that anyway.

I don't really want to explore or imagine/"live" an experience wherein a child is menaced or disturbed by a malicious person...

I'll see what happens, I guess.
