Nightmarish Anxiety

I'm heading on a trip soon. I'm trying to be excited about it. I've got Pinterest boards, my suitcase is open and slowly being filled, plane ticket is paid for, nice people waiting for me when I get there... Honestly I should be thrilled!!

But then I get the nightmares- or- well you see they're not exactly nightmares. I fall asleep each night and some mild catastrophe is always awaiting me. My suitcase is stolen. The flight gets canceled. There's no one waiting for me. I'm mugged on the streets. I get a parasite and I'm in agony for the rest of the trip. My debit card doesn't work at the foreign ATMs. Internet is down for the whole trip. I get hurt. I'm ogled on every bus I go on. Nothing works out.

And then I wake up. Exhausted. Anxious. Unfocused. And I'm supposed to be excited for my trip?

Sorry this isn't very story-like. It's just a bit of a theatrical vent.

I know how it is to have anxiety dreams. But then nothing you dreamed about happens and it's all good!

I've become accustomed to stress dreams, especially this past year. Sometimes it takes me a while to shake off the effects.

Very relatable. I wonder if it's worse for us with imaginations. We can dream up the permutations. Although perhaps that's a strength as well. If you have the time, check out The Zebra Storyteller and the accompanying breakdown. http://notearama.blogspot.com/2014/06/notes-on-zebra-storyteller.html

Thanks for participating in the first challenge, and congrats on being the first official Ficlattè challenge winner! I picked yours in part because it's so relatable and in part because it mirrors the kind of stresses I've dealt with in my own life this last year that have led to repetitive nights of poor sleep and restless dreaming.

Story challenge:

I guess I'll kick this sucker off.

We all have dreams, some good, some nightmarish, but probably mostly somewhere in between. Pick a dream you've had -- recently, from childhood, whatever -- and use it as the basis of a story.

I'll leave the challenge …
