Run to the main stairs
This is "slapdashmonuments" creating a new Ficlatte account for the purpose of trying to write some Choose Your Own Adventure stories using Ficlatte's sequeling features. I'll tag work-in-progress parts WIP until the whole story is ready to play.

When you get to the main stairs, you see a cloud of black smoke rising before you. Moving cautiously closer, you see flames leaping up the stairs!
Good grief, this will never do!
However, though you are frightened of the fire, you see that it is still on the stairs below the second floor. You could try to run down to the second floor and take your chances there, or go back to the back stairs.
