The Tradition of Nemea

HSAR

This too shall pass.

"Mayfield? Let's have the suits, and a weapon for the lieutenant please."

"That's not necessary, there are suits -"

Nyquist's other guard appeared from nowhere, passing me a dense package that was far heavier than fabric. Seeing my reaction, he comm'd on a private line.

"Are you rated for ops with the Lightweight Tactical Hazard Suit, ma'am?"

"Negative. Can you help me with it?"

"Yes, ma'am."

He took the bundle and twisted it, letting the memory material unfold elegantly into a semi-humanoid shape. He had me step into it and - very gently - started hooking it in to the standard loops on my jumpsuit, speaking as he did so. It seemed heavier than the regular civilian models, but it still moved easily enough.

"The LTHS is a semi-powered suit providing limited protective and exoatmospheric capability. It is loaded with consumables: 6 hours in combat or 48 in survival-"

"The full spiel is going to have to wait, Mayfield. Duty calls. Is she good to go?"

The trooper offered me his pistol.

"She is now."

I've been trying to follow this for a while. I understand her role, but sometimes I get lost in the jargon. I like her suit, though.

My aim is to have the story make sense without the jargon, but it does move a little slower as a result - and the character limit is rather cumbersome at times.

I don't think it needs to be eliminated. I think it needs explained at times. But I understand completely about the character limit!

The main character is supposed to understand the jargon, but I might try and go back to explain it in the comments. Feels like cheating, though.

Think of it as annotations or footnotes of a critical Norton edition, maybe, HSAR. :D

The Lightweight Tactical Hazard Suit is a recently-developed light tactical suit analogous to a lightweight stab vest - it's lighter (poor Mayfield was carrying two spares!) and easier to move in than the full-fat Advanced Combat Hazard Suit that the other troopers are wearing, but it has broadly similar capabilities.

It'll protect from gunfire and space, although neither for all that long - Mayfield's line was to explain that it has air, power and thruster propellant for about 6 hours heavy use or two days if you stretch it out.

I had a big paragraph about how there are standard loops (sort of like belt loops but all over the body) for hooking a spacesuit onto on top of regular clothing, and how Nyquist has them hidden on his dress grays, but I had to cut it because of character count. Bah.
