Cooling Embers
There was a few times when the lights would flare up again, the embers would be stirred by a passing breeze. But nothing lasted. And the creature began to accept its cruel fate and give up hope. It grew dim and thin and it laid down on the floor to die with the rest of the place it used to call home.
But suddenly went all the light went out. There was a flash. A spot of light that raced into the creature's would-be tomb and raked embers to a sputtering life. The creature twitched. An eye blearily opening for a moment.
Was this a trick?
Was it a ploy?
Some transient passing torch that would leave as swiftly as it came?
