In the Shadow of the Gods: A Memoir

Robert Quick

Where the -@!# did my muse go?

Writer, dreamer, knight, shackled by entertainment . . . and people.

I don't know me now but I remember what I used to be. I was one of them, a super. Notice that I didn't say hero, though some people certainly thought of me as one. I was the Operator, named after the switchboard connectors of the first half of the twentieth century. Not a name to shake the pillars of heaven, is it?

It wasn't meant to be. While I was one of them, I wasn't one of the glamorous ones. No super strength, no lasers or weather control. No mind control. My main power was to Connect With Certainty. I connected people with things that could enrich their life. I connected an artist to her talent that she thought was just a hobby. I connected a man and woman who became husband and wife. I created opportunities for ties.

My secondary power was even more minor: an aura of welcoming safety. People were a little more carefree, worried a little less, when I was around. I got invited to a lot of parties.

When I was drafted by the US government into the first Post-human war, everything changed for me.

Oh man this is just cool. I want to know where this came from. Just popped into your head? Don't tell me it will just ruin it. The idea is brilliant. One million pencils.

I've always loved the idea of heroes with unconventional powers, things that could be considered lesser by some but that could, in a way, be greater than the ability to stop bullets and speed faster than any known object on Earth. This is a beautiful and well-written piece.

Story prompt:

If you were a superhero, as in YOUR traits are your superpowers, who would you be? Not an alter ego, rather your awesomeness on steroids or in overdrive.
