Family History Time!
Inspiration hits with a flash, stories written on the go. A rumble of laughter and the tale is heard only in echoes. The wind blows me in a new direction. Whom shall I visit next?
My name is Boopy Daniels. I just wanted to tell you the origin of my name, since lots of people seem curious about it. No secret, just a bit obscure. It's a pretty good anecdote.
Back in my grandparents' time (on my mama's side), when telephones were just starting to be introduced out in the sticks, the first phone, a rotary phone, was put in the Carnel Square in their village, so everyone could have easy access. They called it the Carnel Phone, or CP, for short, put a glass cupola over it to protect it from the weather. Now old Arfie Daniels, the telegraph man, was put in charge of collecting for the CP, and he would go round twice a year with his little copper cup asking people to "chip in" with their 2 cents, which is where that phrase comes from: Copper Cup.
Well, it came 1946 and time for the second collection for the CP, and here comes Arfie to my grandmim's place, knocking on the door with his thimble. Tap, tap! She puts in her 2 cent piece. BOOPIE! The cup had bugs in it.
And it stuck.
