All literary fiction follows this basic pattern, according to a guy I heard on the radio last week. For commercial fiction, replace with "does get it".
There is at least one exception to the rule: in Catcher in the Rye the guy doesn't want anything, doesn't try to get anything and, in the end, doesn't get anything. And I spent hours finding this out. What a waste of life.
