Fall of the Great House
"Wait. Excuse me, what? What do you mean I can't go back?"
The gate stood resolute and impenetrable. I tried to rattle its bars, but it didn't so much as tremble at my efforts.
I had seen the notices, read the warnings, but who could accept that their home had been condemned? I just kept coming back over and again, until that day.
There was no going back.
I was lost. No, I was fine. I didn't need a home. Forget all that. I could still make my way.
Alone.
And then I knew how much it mattered.
That's when I stopped peering between the bars and started looking for the others made homeless, in time to find they had made a home for themselves. It will take a while to settle in, but I'm here for the long haul. I need this as much as they do. Not just the rules, not just the constraint, but a place to be responsible for, to make a place within.
A family to be with, even if I'm a bit of an outsider.
Because as cliche and ridiculous as it sounds, I love you guys, and I need you.

Come in! Help yourself to some coffee, the pot is over there by the fireplace.
With respect to ethelthefrog, it's not quite the equal of the Great and Wonderful House yet, but it's getting there. Do you remember the great and wondrous people who wrote wonderful things and were friendly to all the newcomers and critiqued everything with love and care? This is your chance to be those people for Ficlatte.

We've made it here which is what counts. We shall band together a new family, and spin new tales, and build a new house - Nein! - build a castle. With a moat. And a space dock!... I've gotten carried away, pardon. But nonetheless, welcome. :)

Space dock... Now there's an idea. I'd wondered what to do with the back lawn.

Beware of the moat, by the way. I've been testing space suit prototypes in it, and there's a lot of equipment down there.

Words from the heart. You're certainly not an outsider in this house.
Your words express exactly my feelings when Kevin made his announcement. The sense of panic and foreboding was my principal motivation for starting this site. Too many amazing things happened in our former houses for me to let it just stop.
We're a small, rag-tag bunch as yet, but we're here, and we've not given up hope.
